A two day, in-person, workshop with Letterluxe Signs at Neon Williams Neon Sign shop in Somerville, Massachusetts.
This two-day, hands-on, introductory workshop will cover the most essential hand-lettering skills used in traditional sign painting. Attendees will walk away with the basic knowledge and tools needed to paint a sign from start to finish.
Through hands-on, guided instruction, you’ll be introduced to the most important tools, rules, and methods while learning how to draw and paint block and casual lettering. You’ll walk away with a sign you make - and the foundational building blocks to help bring your skills to a new level.
Day 1:
- Understanding the tools of the trade
- Learning to see and draw block lettering
- Developing brush control, building on these skills to paint your sign
- Introduction to sign layout
- Pre-production of a real sign
Day 2:
- Learn the basics of casual lettering
- Intro to shadow and 3-D effects
- Review layouts, refine, and start your sign
- Paint your sign to take home
Who should take the workshop?
This workshop is designed to accommodate all levels of skill and interest. The instructors meet each person where they are on their journey - wether you're an enthusiast or a seasoned pro.
Each attendee will leave with a sign they work on throughout the weekend - and the techniques and tools to help you practice on your own.
Workshops go from from 9am - 6pm with an hour break for lunch.
Lunch, water and snacks are included for both days.
About the instructor:
Sam Pitino is the owner and operator of Letterluxe Signs in Medford, Massachusetts, specializing in 100% hand-drawn and hand-painted signs of all kinds. Sam has been painting signs since 1986. Taught by masters of the trade at a young age, Sam opened up his first shop at 19. At 21, he was contracted by Universal Studios to paint signs, walls, and windows throughout the park. At 22, Sam was featured in SignCraft Magazine. At 29, he attended Massachusetts College of Art and acquired a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design and Typography. Sam then spent 20 years in graphic design and branding, eventually leading the creative department as VP Executive Creative Director at Small Army Advertising in Boston. Sam’s work has won numerous trade awards and has been featured in SignCraft Magazine, Print Magazine, How Magazine and BLAG Magazine.
